Docker developer job description
Three copy-ready templates — mid-level, senior and lead — written for 2026 Docker roles. Paste one into your careers page, or send it to us as a brief and meet vetted Docker engineers in 48 hours instead.
Mid-level Docker engineer
Delivers features independently within established patterns.
About the role We are hiring a Mid-level Docker Engineer to improve how application teams build, run, and troubleshoot containerized services. You will work across development, CI, and runtime environments, turning common Docker pain points into reliable patterns. What you'll do Maintain Dockerfiles and Compose workflows for services in active development. Improve BuildKit/buildx usage, cache behavior, image size, and repeatability. Diagnose container startup, networking, permissions, and volume issues. Add practical security improvements such as non-root users, safer secrets handling, and vulnerability remediation. Support CI pipelines that build, scan, tag, and publish images. Write clear runbooks and help developers use Docker consistently without slowing them down. What you'll bring Hands-on experience with Docker Engine, Compose v2, registries, Linux permissions, networking basics, and CI systems such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins. You can read logs, inspect containers, debug failed builds, and explain trade-offs clearly. You are comfortable with at least one common application stack such as Node.js, Python, Java, Go, or .NET. Nice to have Experience with buildx multi-architecture builds, Docker Scout or similar scanners, SBOM generation, rootless Docker, Kubernetes basics, or platform engineering work.
Senior Docker engineer
Owns significant areas, sets patterns and mentors.
About the role We are hiring a Senior Docker Engineer to own container build and runtime standards across multiple teams. This role is for someone who can set direction, solve difficult production and CI issues, and make Docker safer and easier to use at scale. What you'll do Define and evolve Dockerfile, Compose, image tagging, and registry practices. Design BuildKit/buildx pipelines with reusable caching, multi-architecture support, provenance, SBOMs, and vulnerability gates. Lead debugging of complex container issues involving networking, filesystem layers, permissions, daemon behavior, resource limits, and registry failures. Partner with security on image signing, secret handling, base image policy, and patch response. Review service migrations from VM or Compose-based deployments toward orchestrated environments where appropriate. Mentor engineers through documentation, pairing, and design reviews. What you'll bring Deep hands-on experience with Docker Engine, Compose v2, BuildKit/buildx, container registries, Linux internals relevant to containers, and CI/CD. You can balance security, developer experience, performance, and operability. You communicate clearly during incidents and can turn repeated problems into durable platform improvements. Nice to have Experience with Kubernetes, containerd, rootless Docker, Cosign or Notation, SLSA-style provenance, policy-as-code, or operating shared build infrastructure.
Lead Docker engineer
Sets technical direction and leads a team.
About the role We are hiring a Lead Docker Engineer to guide container strategy, technical standards, and delivery across engineering teams. You will combine deep Docker expertise with leadership: setting direction, building alignment, and raising the quality of containerized software without becoming a bottleneck. What you'll do Own the roadmap for Docker-based build, test, publishing, and local development workflows. Establish standards for base images, tagging, signing, SBOMs, vulnerability response, secrets, multi-architecture builds, and registry lifecycle. Lead design reviews for major container platform changes and migrations. Coordinate with security, infrastructure, and application leaders on risk, reliability, and developer productivity. Coach senior and mid-level engineers, create reusable patterns, and ensure decisions are documented. Drive incident follow-up when container builds, registries, or runtime assumptions cause outages or release delays. What you'll bring Extensive experience designing and operating Docker practices across many services and teams. Strong knowledge of Docker Engine, Compose v2, BuildKit/buildx, registries, Linux isolation, CI/CD, and supply-chain controls. You can influence without relying on authority, make trade-offs explicit, and keep standards practical. Nice to have Experience leading platform teams, Kubernetes migration strategy, regulated environments, OpenSSF tooling, rootless build infrastructure, container runtime security, or large-scale developer enablement programs.
