Mid-level PHP engineer
Delivers features independently within established patterns.
About the role We are hiring a Mid-Level PHP Engineer to build and maintain backend features for a remote product team. You will work in a modern PHP stack, typically PHP 8.3 or 8.4 with Laravel or Symfony, relational databases, queues, and HTTP APIs. This role is suited to someone who can deliver well-scoped features independently and ask good questions when requirements are unclear. What you'll do Build and ship backend features, API endpoints, console commands, and queue jobs. Write tests with PHPUnit or Pest and help keep CI reliable. Debug production issues using logs, traces, and database investigation. Improve existing code through small refactors, better validation, and clearer boundaries. Collaborate with product, frontend, QA, and senior engineers during planning and review. What you'll bring Professional PHP experience with Laravel, Symfony, or a comparable framework. Comfort with Composer, SQL, Git, Docker-based development, and automated testing. Good judgment around validation, security basics, performance, and maintainability. Clear written communication for remote work. Nice to have Experience with Redis, message queues, OpenAPI, PHPStan or Psalm, cloud deployment, or upgrading older PHP applications.
Senior PHP engineer
Owns significant areas, sets patterns and mentors.
About the role We are hiring a Senior PHP Engineer to own important backend systems and guide technical decisions across a remote engineering team. You will work with PHP 8.3 or 8.4, Laravel or Symfony, relational databases, caches, queues, and integrations with internal and external services. This role is for someone who can turn ambiguous product needs into reliable, maintainable systems. What you'll do Design and implement backend features with clear domain boundaries and safe rollout plans. Lead technical discovery, review architecture proposals, and improve production reliability. Diagnose complex issues involving database performance, queue behavior, third-party APIs, and PHP runtime configuration. Raise the quality bar through code reviews, testing strategy, observability, and pragmatic refactoring. Mentor mid-level engineers without becoming a bottleneck. What you'll bring Deep PHP experience in production systems, including modern language features, Composer, framework internals, and secure API design. Strong SQL skills and experience with transactions, indexes, migrations, and data integrity. Practical experience with queues, caching, CI/CD, Docker, and monitoring. Clear communication and comfort making trade-offs visible. Nice to have Experience with event-driven architecture, outbox patterns, OpenTelemetry, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch, multi-tenant SaaS, or leading major framework and PHP version upgrades.
Lead PHP engineer
Sets technical direction and leads a team.
About the role We are hiring a Lead PHP Engineer to provide technical direction for a remote backend team while remaining hands-on. You will shape architecture, delivery practices, and engineering standards for PHP systems built with Laravel, Symfony, or similar frameworks. This role combines implementation, technical leadership, mentoring, and cross-functional planning. What you'll do Set technical direction for backend initiatives and translate product goals into staged delivery plans. Lead design reviews for APIs, data models, queues, integrations, and reliability improvements. Identify risks early, coordinate migrations, and guide incident follow-up. Coach engineers through code reviews, pairing, and feedback. Keep the team aligned on testing, security, observability, static analysis, and deployment practices. Work with product and engineering leadership to balance delivery, quality, and long-term maintainability. What you'll bring Extensive production PHP experience with modern PHP versions, Composer, Laravel or Symfony, relational databases, caching, and background processing. A track record of leading technical projects across multiple engineers. Strong judgment around system boundaries, data consistency, performance, and operational readiness. Excellent written communication for remote collaboration and decision records. Nice to have Experience leading legacy modernization, modular monolith strategy, service extraction, compliance-sensitive systems, platform engineering, or shared engineering standards across multiple teams.
