PostgreSQL developer job description
Three copy-ready templates — mid-level, senior and lead — written for 2026 PostgreSQL roles. Paste one into your careers page, or send it to us as a brief and meet vetted PostgreSQL engineers in 48 hours instead.
Mid-level PostgreSQL engineer
Delivers features independently within established patterns.
About the role We are hiring a Mid-Level PostgreSQL Engineer to support production databases used by customer-facing applications. You will work with backend engineers, SREs, and product teams to improve query performance, keep migrations safe, and make database behavior easier to understand. This role is hands-on and suited to someone who has operated PostgreSQL in production and wants broader ownership. What you'll do Investigate slow queries using EXPLAIN, pg_stat_statements, logs, and production metrics. Design and review indexes, constraints, and schema changes. Help run backups, restores, replicas, and routine maintenance. Improve migration patterns for large tables, including concurrent indexes and batched backfills. Tune autovacuum and table settings with guidance. Write clear runbooks and participate in incident response for database-related issues. What you'll bring Practical PostgreSQL experience, ideally with versions 13 or newer. Solid SQL skills, comfort reading execution plans, and understanding of transactions, locks, indexes, and vacuum. Experience working with application teams and explaining trade-offs in plain language. Careful change management and willingness to document your work. Nice to have Experience with PgBouncer, pgBackRest, Barman, WAL-G, managed PostgreSQL platforms, Terraform, Kubernetes, or observability tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
Senior PostgreSQL engineer
Owns significant areas, sets patterns and mentors.
About the role We are hiring a Senior PostgreSQL Engineer to own performance, reliability, and data lifecycle decisions for high-traffic production systems. You will lead technical design for PostgreSQL features, review risky changes, and guide teams through incidents, migrations, and upgrades. This is a hands-on role with influence across engineering, not a ticket-only DBA position. What you'll do Lead investigations into latency spikes, lock contention, replication lag, bloat, and recovery issues. Design partitioning, indexing, backup, restore, and high-availability patterns. Plan major PostgreSQL upgrades, online migrations, and tenant or data movement projects. Set standards for schema review, observability, and safe rollout. Mentor engineers on SQL, transaction design, and operational trade-offs. Partner with application teams to prevent database problems before they reach production. What you'll bring Deep PostgreSQL production experience, including query planning, MVCC, vacuum, WAL, replication, PITR, and connection management. Strong judgment under incident pressure and a track record of improving systems without unnecessary complexity. Experience with PostgreSQL 14 or newer and tools such as PgBouncer, pgBackRest, Patroni, pg_stat_statements, and auto_explain. Nice to have Experience with logical replication, multi-tenant SaaS architectures, large partitioned tables, cloud-managed PostgreSQL, Kubernetes operators, data privacy controls, or extensions such as pg_partman, pg_repack, PostGIS, or TimescaleDB.
Lead PostgreSQL engineer
Sets technical direction and leads a team.
About the role We are hiring a Lead PostgreSQL Engineer to set database strategy and technical direction across multiple engineering teams. You will combine deep PostgreSQL expertise with leadership: establishing standards, coaching engineers, making architectural calls, and coordinating complex operational work. The role is still technical and hands-on, but your success will also come from raising the quality of decisions made by others. What you'll do Define PostgreSQL reliability, performance, backup, upgrade, and migration standards. Lead design reviews for multi-tenant data models, high availability, partitioning, logical replication, and major platform changes. Own incident learning and long-term remediation for database failures. Build a roadmap for observability, capacity planning, lifecycle management, and developer enablement. Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, review critical changes, and align database work with product and compliance needs. What you'll bring Expert-level PostgreSQL production experience and the ability to reason from first principles about MVCC, planner behavior, WAL, replication, locking, vacuum, and recovery. Proven leadership in cross-team initiatives, incidents, and architecture reviews. Clear written communication, pragmatic risk management, and the ability to balance developer velocity with data safety. Nice to have Experience building database platforms, leading PostgreSQL major-version upgrades, managing fleets across cloud providers, contributing to internal tooling, or working with regulated data, disaster recovery programs, and formal change management.
