Ruby on Rails developer job description

Three copy-ready templates — mid-level, senior and lead — written for 2026 Ruby on Rails roles. Paste one into your careers page, or send it to us as a brief and meet vetted Ruby on Rails engineers in 48 hours instead.

Mid-level Ruby on Rails engineer

Delivers features independently within established patterns.

About the role
We are looking for a Mid Ruby on Rails Engineer to build and maintain product features in a modern Rails application. You will work with product, design, and other engineers to ship reliable changes, improve existing code, and learn the domain deeply enough to make good implementation decisions.

What you'll do
Build Rails features using Ruby 3.x, Rails 7.2 or 8.x, PostgreSQL, and background jobs. Write request, model, and system tests. Debug production issues with logs, error tracking, and database queries. Improve slow endpoints, clean up risky code paths, and participate in code reviews. Collaborate remotely with clear updates and thoughtful questions.

What you'll bring
Professional experience building Rails applications. Comfort with Active Record, SQL basics, validations, associations, migrations, and background processing. Ability to write clear tests and review code constructively. Good judgment about when to refactor and when to keep a solution simple. Written communication skills for remote teamwork.

Nice to have
Experience with Hotwire, JSON APIs, Sidekiq or Solid Queue, Pundit, RSpec or Minitest, GitHub Actions, Docker, or deploying Rails with platforms such as Heroku, Render, Fly.io, AWS, or Kamal.

Senior Ruby on Rails engineer

Owns significant areas, sets patterns and mentors.

About the role
We are looking for a Senior Ruby on Rails Engineer to own important product areas and technical improvements in a production Rails system. You will be expected to make sound trade-offs, guide implementation across features, and raise the reliability and maintainability of the codebase.

What you'll do
Lead delivery of complex Rails features from design through rollout. Model data carefully in PostgreSQL, design safe migrations, and build reliable background workflows with Active Job, Sidekiq, or Solid Queue. Improve performance using query analysis, caching where appropriate, and production observability. Review pull requests with attention to correctness, security, and long-term maintainability. Partner with product managers to break work into safe, valuable increments.

What you'll bring
Strong Rails experience in production systems, including Active Record, transactions, authorization, testing, and debugging. Good SQL skills and awareness of database constraints, indexes, and migration risks. Experience designing APIs or Hotwire-driven interfaces. Ability to mentor engineers, communicate trade-offs clearly, and take ownership during incidents.

Nice to have
Experience upgrading Rails versions, extracting modules from a monolith, building multi-tenant SaaS features, using Pundit, instrumenting apps with OpenTelemetry-compatible tools, or deploying with Docker, Kubernetes, or Kamal.

Lead Ruby on Rails engineer

Sets technical direction and leads a team.

About the role
We are looking for a Lead Ruby on Rails Engineer to guide technical direction for a remote engineering team while remaining hands-on. You will shape architecture, improve engineering practices, and help the team deliver product outcomes without creating unnecessary process or complexity.

What you'll do
Set technical direction for a Rails codebase running Ruby 3.x and Rails 7.2 or 8.x. Lead architecture discussions for domains such as billing, permissions, integrations, reporting, or multi-tenancy. Establish patterns for testing, observability, background jobs, migrations, and code review. Coordinate delivery across engineers, product, design, and operations. Identify risks early, split large efforts into reversible steps, and mentor engineers through pairing, design reviews, and incident follow-up.

What you'll bring
Deep experience with production Rails systems and PostgreSQL. Strong judgment about monoliths, engines, service boundaries, data integrity, performance, and operational reliability. A track record of leading technical projects through ambiguity. Ability to coach senior and mid-level engineers, communicate with non-engineering stakeholders, and maintain high standards without blocking delivery.

Nice to have
Experience with Rails upgrades, Hotwire at scale, API versioning, OpenTelemetry, incident management, security reviews, distributed teams, and deployment approaches such as Kamal, Kubernetes, AWS, Fly.io, Render, or Heroku.
