Kubernetes developer job description

Three copy-ready templates — mid-level, senior and lead — written for 2026 Kubernetes roles. Paste one into your careers page, or send it to us as a brief and meet vetted Kubernetes engineers in 48 hours instead.

Mid-level Kubernetes engineer

Delivers features independently within established patterns.

About the role
We are hiring a Mid-Level Kubernetes Engineer to help operate and improve production Kubernetes platforms for application teams. You will work on managed clusters, GitOps delivery, observability, and day-to-day reliability work. This role is hands-on and suited to someone who has supported real workloads and wants to grow into broader platform ownership.

What you'll do
- Maintain Kubernetes clusters running current supported versions, primarily on EKS, GKE, or AKS.
- Build and review Helm charts, Kustomize overlays, and Argo CD or Flux changes.
- Troubleshoot deployments, networking, DNS, storage, autoscaling, and node issues.
- Improve alerts, dashboards, runbooks, and incident response practices.
- Help application teams use probes, resources, secrets, and rollout patterns safely.
- Participate in upgrades, add-on changes, and post-incident reviews.

What you'll bring
- Practical Kubernetes experience beyond local tutorials.
- Comfort with kubectl, Linux, containers, YAML, Git, and CI/CD systems.
- Working knowledge of Services, Ingress or Gateway API, RBAC, HPA, ConfigMaps, Secrets, and NetworkPolicy.
- A careful debugging style and clear written communication.

Nice to have
- Experience with Cilium, Calico, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, External Secrets Operator, or policy tools such as Kyverno or OPA Gatekeeper.

Senior Kubernetes engineer

Owns significant areas, sets patterns and mentors.

About the role
We are hiring a Senior Kubernetes Engineer to own reliable platform capabilities across production clusters. You will lead technical decisions for cluster lifecycle, workload delivery, security controls, observability, and incident response. This role requires strong hands-on skills and the judgment to make safe changes in systems used by multiple engineering teams.

What you'll do
- Design and operate Kubernetes platforms on EKS, GKE, AKS, or self-managed clusters.
- Lead cluster upgrades, API deprecation remediation, node pool rotation, and add-on lifecycle management.
- Define GitOps workflows using Argo CD or Flux with Helm and Kustomize.
- Improve tenancy with RBAC, quotas, NetworkPolicies, Pod Security Standards, and admission policies.
- Troubleshoot complex failures involving controllers, CNI, DNS, storage, autoscaling, and ingress or Gateway API.
- Mentor engineers and write practical runbooks, design notes, and incident reviews.

What you'll bring
- Significant experience running production Kubernetes for multiple services or teams.
- Strong understanding of Linux, networking, containers, cloud IAM, and Kubernetes controllers.
- Experience balancing developer self-service with reliability and security.
- Ability to explain trade-offs clearly during incidents and design reviews.

Nice to have
- Experience with Cilium eBPF networking, service mesh, KEDA, Crossplane, Cluster API, OpenTelemetry, SLSA-aligned supply chain controls, or multi-cloud platforms.

Lead Kubernetes engineer

Sets technical direction and leads a team.

About the role
We are hiring a Lead Kubernetes Engineer to set the technical direction for a Kubernetes platform used by multiple product teams. You will combine architecture, hands-on engineering, and leadership. The focus is building a platform that is secure, maintainable, observable, and usable without forcing every application team to become Kubernetes experts.

What you'll do
- Own the Kubernetes platform roadmap, standards, and operating model.
- Lead design reviews for tenancy, networking, secrets, identity, GitOps, progressive delivery, and cluster lifecycle.
- Guide major changes such as Gateway API adoption, CNI migration, policy rollout, or multi-cluster upgrades.
- Establish incident practices, service ownership, SLOs, and operational readiness checks.
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through pairing, reviews, and written design feedback.
- Work with security, infrastructure, and application leaders to prioritize platform work.

What you'll bring
- Deep production Kubernetes experience across architecture and operations.
- A record of leading platform initiatives from design through migration and support.
- Strong judgment on when to standardize, when to allow exceptions, and how to reduce blast radius.
- Clear communication with engineers and non-specialist stakeholders.

Nice to have
- Experience with platform engineering product practices, Backstage, Crossplane, Cluster API, policy-as-code, Cilium, OpenTelemetry, or regulated environments.
