Node.js developer job description

Three copy-ready templates — mid-level, senior and lead — written for 2026 Node.js roles. Paste one into your careers page, or send it to us as a brief and meet vetted Node.js engineers in 48 hours instead.

Mid-level Node.js engineer

Delivers features independently within established patterns.

About the role
We are looking for a Mid-Level Node.js Engineer to build and maintain production services used by customer-facing applications. You will work in a remote product engineering team, contribute to API design, improve reliability, and ship well-tested features in a TypeScript Node.js codebase.

What you'll do
Build REST or GraphQL APIs using Node.js 22 or 24 LTS with frameworks such as Fastify, Express, or NestJS. Implement validation, authorization checks, database access, and background jobs. Write unit and integration tests, review pull requests, and participate in on-call or incident follow-up as appropriate. Improve observability with structured logs, metrics, and traces. Work with product, frontend, QA, and infrastructure teammates to deliver small, safe changes.

What you'll bring
Commercial experience building Node.js services, solid JavaScript and TypeScript skills, and comfort with PostgreSQL or another relational database. You understand async code, error handling, HTTP APIs, testing, and Git-based collaboration. You can debug issues using logs and metrics and communicate clearly in a remote environment.

Nice to have
Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Redis, message queues, OpenTelemetry, Prisma, Drizzle, Kysely, or CI/CD pipelines.

Senior Node.js engineer

Owns significant areas, sets patterns and mentors.

About the role
We are hiring a Senior Node.js Engineer to own important backend services and raise the technical bar for a remote engineering team. You will design service boundaries, guide implementation choices, and help the team deliver reliable APIs and workers without unnecessary complexity.

What you'll do
Lead the design and delivery of Node.js services using TypeScript, PostgreSQL, queues, and cloud-native deployment patterns. Make pragmatic decisions about frameworks, data modeling, caching, retries, idempotency, and observability. Review architecture and code, mentor mid-level engineers, and improve development workflows. Investigate production incidents, drive root-cause analysis, and turn lessons into durable improvements. Collaborate with product and platform teams to break down work, manage risk, and migrate legacy code safely.

What you'll bring
Strong production experience with Node.js, TypeScript, HTTP APIs, databases, and asynchronous processing. You can reason about performance, event loop behavior, memory usage, dependency risk, and operational failure modes. You write clear technical documents, communicate trade-offs, and know when to simplify. You are comfortable owning services through design, delivery, deployment, and support.

Nice to have
Experience with Fastify, NestJS, GraphQL, Kafka, SQS, BullMQ, Redis, OpenTelemetry, Terraform, Kubernetes, multi-tenant systems, or high-compliance environments.

Lead Node.js engineer

Sets technical direction and leads a team.

About the role
We are seeking a Lead Node.js Engineer to provide technical direction for a backend product area while remaining hands-on. You will shape architecture, coach engineers, coordinate cross-team delivery, and ensure Node.js services are secure, observable, and maintainable as the product evolves.

What you'll do
Set the technical roadmap for a group of Node.js and TypeScript services. Lead design reviews, define service standards, and guide decisions on APIs, data ownership, event-driven workflows, reliability, and migration strategy. Partner with product and engineering leadership to sequence work, identify risks, and align teams around clear outcomes. Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through pairing, feedback, and architecture discussions. Own incident readiness, operational reviews, and continuous improvement of build, test, deployment, and observability practices.

What you'll bring
Deep experience designing and operating production Node.js systems, including APIs, workers, databases, queues, and cloud deployments. You can lead through influence, explain trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders, and turn ambiguous problems into executable plans. You value simple designs, strong ownership, inclusive collaboration, and measurable reliability improvements.

Nice to have
Experience leading remote teams, evolving monoliths, platform engineering, domain-driven design, OpenTelemetry, Kubernetes, regulated products, security reviews, or developer experience initiatives.
